Licensing of California Unlawful Detainer Assistants

California legal document assistants are required to be registered as per the California Business & Professions Code §6405. Persons engaged in this profession offer, for compensation, advice or assistance in unlawful detainer matters.

These matters may include bankruptcy or eviction proceedings.

A prerequisite for licensing is that you obtain a $25,000 surety bond. This surety bond is referred to as a California legal document assistant bond or a California unlawful detainer registration assistant bond.

Qualifying and the Premium

You are automatically approved for the $25,000 California legal document assistant bond. This is because we offer this bond without a credit inquiry or underwriter review, for just $250 annually.

Obtaining your bond is just as easy.

When you call us, we’ll just ask for the name as it should appear on your bond. As a note, the name should match all other paperwork that you’ll be submitting for registration.

In addition to your address, we’ll ask for your email and phone number.

After payment of your $250 premium, your bond will be issued to you immediately for filing along with your Power of Attorney form.  You will file the bond with the respective County as required.

Premium Prepayment Options

At $250 premium, your unlawful detainer registration assistant bond will renew on the anniversary of its issuance.

You may also prepay your surety bond up to 3 years, which offers you a savings over annual renewals.

The premium and savings amounts are as follows:

  • If prepaid for 2 years, the premium is $450, a $50 savings;
  • If prepaid for 3 years, the premium is $650, a $100 savings.

Purpose of Your Surety Bond

The purpose of your surety bond requirement is to serve as a financial guarantee that you’ll be in compliance with all laws and statutes involved in working as a legal document assistant/unlawful detainer registration assistant, as amended.
