Excavation – Licensing; Surety Bond Amount & Purpose
Excavation permits in San Francisco are granted by the city’s Public Works department.
The permit allows for working on sidewalks, roads, and other public right of ways for the purpose of constructing, repairing or replacing utilities.
The city requires excavator contractors to obtain a $25,000 surety bond (this is the minimum amount). The bond is for the benefit of the city of San Francisco and the Department of Public Works.
The surety bond serves as a financial guarantee that excavation work performed will be up to Code; and that this guarantee is for a period of 3 years from the completion of the work performed.
Qualifying and the Premium
