Licensing of Special Surplus Lines Brokers
The California Department of Insurance is the licensing and regulatory body of California special surplus lines brokers.
According to the Department, special surplus lines brokers place insurance for non-admitted insurance for:
- Railroads in interstate commerce;
- And insurance against perils of navigation.
A condition of licensing is that you obtain a $10,000 surety bond.

Qualifying and the Premium
You are automatically approved for the $10,000 California special surplus lines broker bond. There is no credit check and the premium is $100 annually.
When you call us, we’ll just ask you the following: The name as it should appear on your surety bond. And, we’ll need your address, email and phone number.
After payment of the premium your bond will be issued to you immediately. It is the original documents that you’ll file.
Included with your surety bond will be a notarized jurat and a Power of Attorney form. Upon receipt by mail, you’ll sign your bond as Principal and file all received documents to:

Premium Prepayment Options
At $100, your $10,000 special surplus lines broker bond will renew on the anniversary of its issuance. You also have the option to prepay your bond premium up to 3 years, which will save you over annual renewals.
The premium prepayment option and savings are as follows:
- If prepaid for 2 years, the premium is $180, a $20 savings;
- If prepaid for 3 years, the premium is $260, a $40 savings.
