Mechanical Contractors – Minnesota

In Minnesota, there is no formal license requirement for mechanical contractors. However, as a mechanical contractor, the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry requires you to obtain a mechanical contractor surety bond and then file it with the Department.

This does not mean, however, that just a surety bond is sufficient; at the link above, you will see that there are other business-related procedures which must be met.

Our agency offers you this bond with easy, credit-free qualifications.

Amount of Surety – Qualifying – The Premium Amount

A Minnesota mechanical contractor bond is a $25,000 surety bond.  With our agency, after completing a short surety bond application (which can be completed over the phone), and payment of the $250 premium, the bond is issued to you immediately.

Unlike with many other surety bond types, there is neither a credit inquiry or underwriting involved in underwriting the mechanical contractor bond.

Once issued, a copy of the bond can be emailed to you, and the original will be sent by the same or the following business day.

Additional Premium Payment Options

The Minnesota mechanical contractor bond, at $250, is issued for a standard year. Thereafter, this surety bond must be renewed.

Additional premium payment options, for 2 or 3 years, are available which offer you a savings over year to year renewal of the surety bond.

The breakdown is as follows:

  • 2 years for $450, (a $50 savings);
  • 3 years for $650, (a $100 savings).

Once prepaid, there is no refund offered for early cancellation of the bond premium.

The Purpose of the Surety Bond

Mechanical contractors include those whose work involves:

  • Gas;
  • Heating;
  • Ventilation;
  • Cooling;
  • Air Conditioning;
  • Fuel Burning;
  • Refrigeration

The bond is a financial guarantee for the state of Minnesota, and for consumers, that you will perform your duties in accordance all laws, particularly the Minnesota State Mechanical Code.

The bond protects these others from the failure of compliance on the part of a bonded contractor, which in turn, causes harm.
