Contractors who perform excavation work in Billings, Montana, are required to obtain a $10,000 surety bond, in addition to meeting other requirements.

Qualifying and the Premium
There is no formal application process for obtaining the $10,000 Billings excavation bond. When you call us, we’ll just ask you the basics — the name, exactly as it should appear on your surety bond, along with your contact information (including an email address).

Premium Prepayment Options
At $100 annual premium, your excavation surety bond will expire and need to be renewed one year from the date of issuance.
You also have the option to prepay your surety bond up to 3 years, thereby offering you a savings over annual renewals.
The premium prepayment option and savings are as follows:
- If prepaid for 2 years, the premium is $180, a $20 savings;
- If prepaid for 3 years, the premium is $260, a $40 savings.
Purpose of Your Surety Bond
This excavation surety bond is required in compliance with Billings Ordinance NO. 03-5250, and is a financial guarantee of your compliance with all rules regarding digging, excavation, or tunneling in Billings.
Installing water and sewer pipes are explicitly excluded by city ordinance. These require a utility surety bond, which is also available from our agency.
