Notary Public Licensing
North Dakota applicants for the notary public license are regulated and licensed by the North Dakota Secretary of State.
The requirements to become a notary public are listed on the state’s website. One of the requirements is that you obtain a $7500 surety bond. This notary public bond is a onetime payment and the bond is active for the length of your 6-year commission.
Qualifying and the Premium
The $7500 North Dakota notary bond has a premium of just $50 (likely the amount you will pay with our agency or any other surety agencies).
Obtaining your bond is also easy. When you call us, we’ll ask you the following:
- Your name, exactly as it should appear on your bond;
- Your address, and other contact information which includes your email and phone number (Please note that you can only file the original bond, not a copy);
- The beginning and end date of your commission;
- Your social security number (There is no credit check, but the state bond form has a field for social security numbers, and so we’re required to include it).
After payment of the onetime premium of $50, our agency issues your bond. We’ll also have your bond notarized as Surety. Upon receipt, you’ll have notarized and sign your bond as Principal.
The address to file your completed bond will be:
Secretary of State, State of North Dakota
600 E. Boulevard Avenue
Bismarck, ND 58505-0500
701-328-2901 is the department’s contact phone number.
Purpose of Your Surety Bond
Section 44-06.4 of the state’s statutes mandates your notary surety bond. The bond is a financial guarantee for the public that you will perform notarial acts in accordance with all laws and regulations.
Therefore, while your bond is a condition of licensing, it does not protect you, but rather the consumer public and the state of North Dakota.
