Surety Bond of Texas Peace Officers; Purpose

According to the Texas Water Code 49.216, Texas peace officers are required to be bonded in an amount not to exceed $1000, per officer.

The surety bond requirement serves as a financial guarantee that the officer who has been contracted by a Texas district will lawfully perform all peace officer – related duties.

Whether the peace officer is contracted through a county, city, constable or municipality, the officer is considered an independent contractor.

Qualifying and the Premium

The $1000 Texas peace officer bond is offered with immediate issuance and there is no credit check. The bond can be purchased as either one surety bond for one peace officer; it may also be purchased for a group of officer.

As an example of what premium you may expect, a single $1000 peace officer bond for one person will have an annual premium of $100; a $99,000 Texas peace officer bond (for 99 officers) will have an annual premium of $396.00.

Qualifying is easy. We’ll need two main items: The name and address of and for whom the bond is issued.

The second item we’ll need is the name and contact information of the obligee; that is, the entity which is requiring the bond of you. This is the entity where your bond is filed.

Once that information is provided to us and the premium is paid, our agency issues the bond to you immediately.

You will take the original surety bond along with the Power of Attorney form for filing with the entity requiring the surety bond.

Surety Bond Term

The premium for the Texas peace officer bond renews annually. Options exist to prepay the bond’s premium for up to 3 years, thereby saving over annual renewals and lengthening the time between renewals.
