Transfer of Vehicle Title – Alaska

If you have purchased or plan on purchasing a vehicle and there’s no proof of ownership (i.e. the title is missing), the Alaska DMV requires you to obtain a 3-year surety bond.  In return for doing so, you will be provided what is known as a “bonded title”.

Amount of Surety Bond Required

According to Alaska law, the amount of the Alaska vehicle title surety bond must be 1 ½ times the appraised value of your vehicle. We’ll need to you to provide us with the amount when you call us; we cannot the determine the amount for you.

Preparing for Your Alaska Certificate of Title Bond

Before obtaining your certificate of title surety bond, you’ll need to do two things:

  • The first is to have your vehicle inspected by an employee at the DMV. This is Form 811. The will likely inform you of the amount of surety bond required.
  • The second is that your vehicle must be in the state of Alaska.

Qualifying and the Premium

Our agency provides the Alaska vehicle title surety bond in whatever amount you require.

Up to and including $50,000, we provide this bond to you immediately, without a credit check, for 1% of the amount required (with a minimum of $100).

Regardless of the amount of surety bond required, when you call us, we’ll ask you the following:

  • Your name and address, along with an email address and a good phone number;
  • The license number of your vehicle;
  • The state where your vehicle is registered;
  • The vehicle’s serial number (VIN – vehicle identification number);
  • The year of your vehicle;
  • Your vehicle’s make, model, and body style;
  • Your car’s color
  • Your name and title (i.e. “owner”)

After payment of the premium, our agency issues your bond to you immediately. Along with your surety bond, we will include: 1. a notarized document from us as Surety; and 2. A Power of Attorney form.

Upon receipt, you’ll have notarized your bond, and along with our notary and your Power of Attorney form, you’ll file it to:

State of Alaska

Division of Measurement, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement

Anchorage, AK 99515

Term of Your Surety Bond & Its Purpose

The premium payment for your vehicle title surety bond is a onetime payment and the bond is good for 3 years, as required by Alaska law.

The purpose of your surety requirement is to protect the state of Alaska in case there is any discrepancy or dispute concerning title ownership to your vehicle.
