CA Licensing of Vehicles Imported from Another Country

A foreign vehicle ownership surety bond is required by the California Department of Motor Vehicles as a condition of allowing the registration of a motor vehicle which has been imported from another country.

The bond is a financial guarantee for any prior subsequent owners or lien holder or any future owners of the vehicle that in case a material fact is later discovered which causes them some harm, they may be financially recompensed for the loss.

Amount of Surety Bond Required

Applicants for this surety bond will want to obtain the amount of surety required from the California DMV office; our agency cannot determine the amount of surety bond amount required of you.

Qualifying and the Premium

The California foreign vehicle ownership bond will have a premium of 1% of the bond amount required, or $100, whichever amount is greater.

Additionally, for surety bond requirements up to and including a $50,000 amount, our agency offers you approval without a credit check. Applicants for amounts greater than $50,000 will need to provide a signed application and undergo a credit inquiry.

Good credit is required for amounts greater than $50,000; and the premium is also 1%.

When you call us, besides your identifying information, we’ll need the following:

  • The number of cylinders;
  • The date your vehicle was first sold;
  • The license number;
  • The vehicle make and model;
  • The motor number;
  • The serial number of your vehicle;
  • Your vehicle’s body type;

After approval of your foreign vehicle ownership bond and payment of the premium, our agency issues your surety bond; a notarized jurat; and a Power of Attorney form.

You’ll file your original surety bond along with all of your other paperwork to your California DMV office.

Term of Your Surety Bond

The premium associated with your foreign vehicle surety bond is a onetime payment which is good for 3 years. If no claims are made within that period, your vehicle will then be able to have issued a non-surety bonded title.
