Denver – Special Contractors

The Community Planning and Development department requires special contractors to be licensed and bonded with the city.

Special contracting refers to:

  • the installation of traffic devices;
  • installing water lines;
  • installing sprinkling systems;

* and other items not covered under the Revised Municipal Code.

A condition of licensing is that a surety bond is also obtained. Buying the special contractor bond takes about 5 minutes.

Amount of Surety Required – Qualifications – Premium Amount

The Denver special contractor bond is a $10,000 surety bond required of contractors who engage in contracting work as listed above, in the city of Denver or Denver County.

Qualifying for this bond involves completion of a surety bond application, and payment of the $100 premium. There is no credit inquiry and no standard underwriting involved in this surety bond. The bond is issued to you immediately upon receipt of the premium.

After payment of the premium, a copy of this bond can be emailed to you and the original will follow to be mailed by the same or the following business day.

Additional Premium Payment Options

The special contractor bond is issued for a standard period of one year for $100. You may also choose to prepay this bond for 2 or 3 years, thereby offering you a savings over year to year renewal of the bond’s premium.

Prepayment options are as follows:

  • Prepayment for 2 years at $180;
  • Prepayment for 3 years at $260.

The Purpose of Your Surety Bond Requirement

The purpose of this surety bond requirement serves as a financial guarantee for the city and county of Denver that will hold them harmless for any harm caused by a licensed and bonded special contractor for work performed.

The bond is also a financial guarantee for your compliance with the Revised Municipal Code as it relates to special contracting in Denver County.
