Licensing to Maintain Venomous Reptiles
Florida is a unique state with strange, dangerous and exotic wildlife.
So, while it might be highly unusual and even unheard of in other places, the state of Florida has a surety bond dedicated to venomous reptiles.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission requires persons who capture, keep, maintain, or display in their possession venomous reptiles to obtain a surety bond as a condition of licensing.
The specific reptiles referred to are:
- Canebrake rattlesnakes;
- Copperhead rattlesnakes;
- Coral snakes;
- Cottonmouth snakes;
- Eastern diamondback rattlesnake;
- Pygmy rattlesnakes
Both licensing and a surety bond are required for maintenance of any type of venomous snake, native or nonnative, in Florida.
Florida Venomous Reptile Bond: The Purpose of this Surety Bond

The bond may be used by the Commission to reimburse itself for the seizure, capture, relocation, room and boarding, and veterinarian care of any of your venomous reptiles should that ever be required.
And, should there ever be a payment on the surety bond, you will be legally obligated to reimburse the surety for all costs involved.
