Surety Bond of Maine PI’s and Its Purpose

Maine private investigators — known as Professional Investigators, and also Investigative Assistants, and businesses which engage in contract security, are required to provide evidence of financial responsibility in the form of a surety bond.

The surety bond required is in one of three amounts:

  • Businesses domiciled in Maine require a $10,000 surety bond;
  • An Investigative Assistant requires a $20,000 surety bond;
  • Non-resident businesses require a $50,000 bond.

The purpose your surety bond requirement is to serve as a financial guarantee that you’ll observe all Maine laws and regulations concerning your business and professional conduct.

The Department of Safety, Special Investigations Unit, is the regulatory body for your profession in Maine.
