Maine — The way life should be…

Sheriff officials in all Maine counties, as a condition of office, are statutorily required to furnish evidence of a surety bond.

The breakdown of current amounts required are according to Maine counties as follows:

Sheriffs in the following counties require a $40,000 surety bond:

  • Cumberland;
  • Kennebec;
  • Penobscot;
  • and York County.

All other Maine counties require a sheriff surety bond of $25,000.  This surety bond is also referred to as a Maine sheriff indemnity bond.

Qualifying and the Premium

You are automatically approved for Maine sheriff surety bond in whatever amount you require. There is no credit check or inquiry.

Instead, when you call us, we’ll just ask you the basics. The name as it should appear on your surety bond, and the county where you are Sheriff.

You then have two options.

You can pay your bond for one year; however, if this option is chosen, you’ll need to renew your bond for another year on the bond’s anniversary of issuance.

Or, you can pay a onetime fee for the term of your commission as Sheriff. This is likely the better and receommended option, because you don’t have to renew the bond again—until the end of your current term.

Those who purchase a $25,000 surety bond will pay $100 for one year. A $40,000 surety bond will have a premium of $160 annually.

Once your surety bond is paid, our agency issues it to you immediately. Your original surety bond is sent to you by mail. Upon receipt, you’ll sign your bond as Principal.

The address that we have for filing of your bond is:

State of Maine

35 State House Station

Augusta, ME 04333-0035

Purpose of Your Surety Bond Requirement

The Maine sheriff surety bond requirement is required to be in compliance with Title 30-A Municipalities and Counties §372 1., which states that you will be in compliance with all duties incumbent upon a Sheriff; and that you will be accountable for any misdoings.
