Surety Bond Amount and Purpose

Nonresident contractors who are hired for work in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are required to furnish a surety bond; in this instance, it is also referred to as a “guarantee bond”.

According to Massachusetts General Laws, the amount of surety required by the Commissioner will be equal to 5% of the total amount which is to be paid under the contract.

As a nonresident of the Commonwealth, the purpose of this surety bond is to serve as a financial guarantee that you will pay all applicable state taxes owed in accordance with Massachusetts law.

Qualifying and the Premium

Our agency provides the Massachusetts nonresident contractor bond in the amount required as determined by you.

We also streamline the application process by offering this bond without a credit check inquiry for any amount up to and inclusive of a $25,000 surety requirement.

For applicants who have a surety bond requirement $25,000 and less, we will take the application fro my you over the phone.

Besides the basics, we’ll need you to provide us with the following:

  • Your contractor job name and its location;
  • The name of the Principal or General Contractor;
  • The city and state where you are located (outside of Massachusetts);
  • The day, month, and year, in which you entered into the contract.

Applicants who require a bond greater than $25,000, in addition to the above will need to complete and sign a short surety bond application.

Approval for these higher amounts is determined after a review by a Surety underwriter. This review includes a credit inquiry. To be approved, good credit will be required.
