Surety Bond; Purpose
The Michigan vehicle uniform surety bond may also be referred to as a Michigan certificate of title bond.
The Michigan Department of State requires you to obtain this bond when the ownership of the watercraft, snowmobile, or other vehicle that you are attempting to register is not known to the satisfaction of the Department.
In such cases, the surety bond is required to protect any prior (unknown owners) from loss, and any subsequent owners from loss, should information that is currently not known, subsequently, after procurement of the surety bond, become known.
In this instance, registration of your vehicle is predicated on obtaining surety. Your premium is a onetime payment.
According to Michigan Vehicle Code Section 257.217, a surety bond is required of those:
- whose vehicle is worth over $2500;
- Or, whose vehicle is less than 10 years old.
Amount of Surety Required
The amount of the surety bond will be twice the value of your vehicle, as determined by the Michigan secretary of state.
Qualifying and the Premium
Our agency provides you with the Michigan vehicle uniform surety bond in the amount required of you. Up to a $50,000 requirement, we also do so without a credit check inquiry.
Amounts greater than $50,000, require a signed application and a credit underwriter review.
For the majority of customers, issuing your bond can be done over the phone.
We’ll need the following from you:
- If it’s a snowmobile, the year make, and serial number;
- If it’s a watercraft, we’ll need to know the year, make, hull type and hull number;
- For cars and trucks, we’ll need to know the year, make body style and VIN.
After providing all details and obtaining approval of this bond, our agency issues your certificate of title bond immediately after payment of the onetime premium.
Upon receipt by mail, you’ll sign your bond as Principal. Afterwards you’ll file your signed surety bond to:
