South Carolina – Private Investigators

Private detectives in South Carolina are licensed and regulated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

For new licensees, at the time of the submission of your licensing application, you must also provide evidence of the required $10,000 surety bond.

Perhaps the easiest and quickest part of the entire licensing process is meeting the surety bond requirement. AmeriPro Surety Bonds provides you with the surety bond with several options for purchasing.

For those who need to renew an existing surety bond, we provide this for you as well.

Amount of Surety Bond – Qualifying

The $10,000 South Carolina private detective bond is just $100 annually. Qualifying is simply by means of completing a surety bond application (which can be completed over the phone with an agent).

There is no credit check or underwriting review for your private detective bond. What this means is after surety bond application is completed and the premium is paid, the bond is issued to you immediately.

A copy of the bond can be emailed to you upon payment of the premium by email and the original surety bond will be sent to you by the following business day. You will both sign the original surety bond and submit it along with the Power of Attorney for filing with the department.

Additional Premium Prepayment Options

When a bond is issued for private detectives, the standard term is one year. You also have the option to prepay the surety bond for 2 or 3 years, which offers you a savings over year to year renewal of your surety bond.

The prepayment options that we offer are as follows:

  • If prepaid for 2 years, this bond is $180, a $20 savings;
  • If prepaid for 3 years, this private detective bond is $260, a $40 savings.

Purpose of Your Surety Bond Requirement

The private detective surety bond is required as a financial guarantee for the people of South Carolina that a licensed investigator will comply with all laws and regulations involved involved in being a PI.

The bond’s existence protects those who are harmed by the failure of a detective to follow statutes.
