Freight brokers, both in Utah, and throughout the US, are required to be federally licensed.
The freight broker industry is regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA).
The FMCSA is a division of the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT).
Becoming Licensed as a Utah Freight Broker

- An application for a motor broker carrier, also known as OP-1 and OP-1(ff);
- The application must include a $300.00 application fee. Please be aware: the application fee is non-refundable;

- After the application and appropriate fees are submitted, the FMCSA an MC/FF number. If the applicant applies online it will be received immediately; if by mail, it may take nearly a month to receive it;
***The below item constitutes the third step***
- Applicants have a 10 day protest time frame. What this means is that anyone who objects to the granting of a Utah freight broker license for a particular applicant has 10 days to make known their complaint with the FMCSA;
***The below item constitutes the fourth step***
Applicants for the Utah freight broker license will want to make sure that they are in compliance with the laws for insurance requirements.
In addition to insurance, a $75,000 Utah freight broker bond is required.

Applicants will want to designate either themselves (subject to conditions) or someone else as an agent for process;

At this final step, a license is granted by the FMCSA and the applicant can now operate as a Utah freight broker.
Utah Freight Broker Bond: Purpose
The Utah freight broker bond is for $75,000.00.
This bond is issued to protect customers and consumers from acts of fraud or willful criminal activity by a Utah freight broker.
The license is conditioned upon maintaining the bond in force.
Utah Freight Broker Bond: Premium
The premium for the Utah freight broker bond will be determined by the applicant credit score.
