Licensing of Non-Degree Granting Postsecondary Schools in D.C.

The Higher Education Licensure Commission licenses non-degree post-secondary schools in Washington D.C.

One of the requirements for licensing is that the appropriate surety bond amount is furnished as evidence of financial responsibility.

The surety bond amount is determined as follows:

  • If you have 50 or fewer students and $100,000 or less in net tuition, a $500 surety bond is required;
  • If you have 51 to 150 statutes OR $100,000 to $1,000,000 in net tuition, a $10,000 surety bond is required;
  • If you have 151+ students OR $1,000,001 and up in net tuition received, a $20,000 surety bond is required.

Qualifying and the Premium

We offer all three Washington D.C. nondegree postsecondary school bonds without a credit credit and without an underwriter review. This means that you are automatically approved.

When you call us, besides telling us the amount of surety bond required, we’ll need the following from you:

The name of your school, along with providing us with contact information.

The premium breakdown is as follows:

  • $10,000 surety bond – $100 annual premium (no, this is not a typo);
  • $20,000 surety bond – $200 annual premium.

After payment of the premium, which we’ll take from you over the phone, your surety bond will be issued immediately along with a Power of Attorney (POA) form.

You’ll file the original documents received in the mail after signing as Principal to:
